What is a Backflow Assembly?

A backflow assembly is a plumbing device designed to prevent the reverse flow of potentially contaminated water back into the potable water lines. Its crucial role is to maintain the integrity of our drinking water by ensuring that it flows in one direction only—away from the clean water supply.

While not all backflow assemblies appear similar, they are all required to have two redundant spring-loaded check valves. For applications where there is a greater degree of contamination hazard, there is also an additional vent that would cause any backpressure to drain if there was a critical failure in one of the check valves.

Trust us to handle your backflow testing needs. Contact Mike Leonard's Plumbing & Drain Cleaning today.

Why Do We Have to Test Our Backflow Assembly?

The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) was originally passed by Congress in 1974 to protect public health by regulating the nation’s public drinking water supply. This law gave local water providers the responsibility and authority to maintain safe drinking water for their communities.

After our local water companies treat and pump the water into the underground piping system, the single greatest risk of contamination comes from each and every customer that is connected to their distribution system at their home or business. The water company has the authority to mandate the installation and regular testing of backflow prevention assemblies in order to safeguard the quality of the public water supply.

Because debris in the water system can foul the seals in a backflow assembly, and because rubber seals can also break down overtime from the chlorine in the water used to sanitize the water, regular testing is essential to verify the proper operation of the installed backflow prevention assemblies.

Don't wait for a plumbing emergency to strike. Contact Mike Leonard's Plumbing & Drain Cleaning. We offer regular and emergency services.

Who Does the Water Company Allow to Test Backflow Assemblies?

Backflow testing and repair certification are not included with a plumbing license. The water company requires an ASSE certification to test (ASSE 5110), and a different certification to repair backflow assemblies (ASSE 5130).

At Mike Leonard's Plumbing & Drain Cleaning, we have plumbers who hold both certifications which required extensive classroom time as well as written and practical exams.

Along with the certification, we all use specialty testing equipment which allows us to check differential pressures on each side of the check valves.

Once are tests are performed; we then need to file testing reports directly to the local water company.
